London Transport Museum’s Hidden London tours offer expert-led, behind-the-scenes access to some of the capital’s most historic Underground stations. Among them is the former Dover Street station (which opened in 1906 and later rebuilt and renamed Green Park in the 1930s), offering a fascinating insight of transport history in Mayfair. Tickets are now available for tours from October, and a special British Sign Language tour in March.
Dover Street: Alight Here for Green Park
From October, London Transport Museum is running a series of 85‑minute Hidden London Dover Street: Alight Here for Green Park tours led by expert guides.
Described as a station within a station, Dover Street retains its passageways, lift landings, ventilation shafts and corridors. Also on show are vintage signs and original tiles which haven’t been seen by the public since the station was redeveloped as Green Park in the 1930s. London Transport Museum explain:
“Opened in 1906, Dover Street station was built to serve the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway – the Piccadilly line as we know it today. Located on the edge of Mayfair and in the vicinity of three of London’s Royal Parks, it became one of the busiest stations on the line and was quickly renamed to its current name, ‘Green Park’ in 1933… Journey deep underground and explore the early 20th century former passageways and lift landings from the days of Dover Street station… Hear how Dover Street played a pivotal role during the Second World War, offering a place for the London Transport Executive Board to safely meet during air raids and helping ensure that the Underground’s operations continued to run. Discover where Lord Ashfield, then chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board, had his bedroom secretly fitted at the heart of the station… Step into the impressive large ventilation tunnels that hide behind the platforms of Green Park to provide essential air cooling to the Victoria and Jubilee lines. Peer down on the Tube trains through a secret ventilation shaft and get a unique view that is normally closed to the public on the stations’ platforms.”
