In the 1770s, the rural landscape of what was to become Mayfair was being developed in response to the demand for town residences for the gentry. At the same time as the development of Hertford Street, just around the corner, Apsley House was being built as a home for Arthur Wellesley (the 1st Duke of Wellington). Now managed by English Heritage, you can visit this breathtaking stately home and learn more about how the Georgian aristocracy lived. It’s located next to the entrance to Hyde Park so why not continue your day out by taking a stroll through the elegant park gardens?
