Burlington House, Piccadilly – home to London’s smallest listed buildings

Did you know that the traditional red telephone boxes found at the entrance to Burlington House (The Royal Academy) are prototypes of the iconic K2 design? Dating from 1924, one is wooden and the other is cast iron, and they are the smallest listed buildings in London. The K2 blueprint was created by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (who also created the noteworthy Battersea Power Station). His plan suggested they should be silver and blue, however the General Post Office selected red so they would be easy to spot. Very few K2 designs exist outside of London as it was very difficult to manoeuvre the cast iron construction over a long distance.
