Happy Burns Night from London! Burns Night celebrates the life of Scotland’s most famous poet, Robert Burns, who was born on this day in 1759.
London has two statues of Burns – one in Victoria Embankment Gardens and one in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey. At 12.30pm today, The Burns Club of London (est.1868) will lead a ceremony at Victoria Embankment Gardens; a wreath will be laid and there will also be piping, songs and a recitation.
If you are in the capital this week and wish to celebrate Burns Night, tickets are available for The Ceilidh Club’s event on Friday which includes traditional Scottish fayre, dancing and piping. In the meantime, we will be celebrating with homemade Rumbledethumps, which is a traditional Scottish dish containing potatoes, turnips and cheese – perfect for a winter’s day!
