Colonel Saab: exquisite Indian dining in grand setting of former Holborn Town Hall

We very highly recommend Colonel Saab which is an outstanding independent Indian restaurant located in the beautiful former Holborn Town Hall.

The owner, award-winning entrepreneur and hotelier Roop Partap Choudhary, has taken such time, care and consideration for every aspect of the restaurant and it shows. The menu is varied, the food exquisite, the team charming and attentive, the ambiance relaxed and the décor absolutely stunning with the inclusion of the most breath-takingly beautiful Indian antiques and artworks. We must draw your attention to the 1920s Asprey’s bar (originally created for the Maharaja of Patiala), the 40 rose glass chandeliers and of course the treasured family photos and letters which remind you that loved ones form the essence of Colonel Saab.

What makes Colonel Saab extra special is that it is Roop’s homage to his beloved parents. He has found inspiration from the travels of his father Colonel Manbeer Choudhary (who had the army nickname of Colonel Saab) and mother, Binny Choudhary, which has formed the beating heart of the restaurant.

We watched, with absolute pleasure and fascination, the former municipal building transformed into this incredible establishment and we are proud to have formed friendships with the team. Each stage of the development of Colonel Saab was beautifully documented on its social media platforms which we followed in eager anticipation of its opening in October 2021. Since its launch, it has won an array of awards including Newcomer of the Year at the Asian Curry Awards and Best Newcomer at the British Curry Awards, and it is listed by Forbes as one of the top Indian restaurants.

Colonel Saab can be found on High Holborn close to many of London’s theatres and the Royal Opera House. You may choose to dine here before a performance, but if you have time, we feel it deserves a trip of its own. Once you step inside the doors and are shown to your table, you will be transported by the precious memories of the Choudhary family and you will want to savour it.

If you’re spoilt for choice with the menu, do ask the team for their recommendations. This week we enjoyed the Veganuary menu and tried some incredible recommended dishes.
