One of the most exciting exhibitions in London this summer is Freddie Mercury: A World of his Own, which runs until 5 September.
This major show of Mercury’s flamboyant stage costumes, art collection and musical items is being held by Sotheby’s in advance of their series of auctions of this wonderful array of possessions.
Highlights of the exhibition include the draft lyrics for Bohemian Rhapsody, his Yamaha grand piano (used to compose some of the greatest songs in rock history), his legendary crown and cloak ensemble worn on the 1986 Magic tour, the most incredible artworks by Picasso, Dahi and Fabergé, an extensive collection of Japanese art, and cat artworks, reflecting his love of felines.
This incredible collection of effects has been kept at his beloved Garden Lodge home for over three decades. The exhibition layout beautifully reflects Mercury’s home with items laid out thematically by room.
As Mercury said, “I like to be surrounded by splendid things.”, “I want to lead the Victorian life, surrounded by exquisite clutter.” and “I dress to kill, but tastefully.”, which is very much evident in this incredibly special exhibition.
Sotheby’s can be found in New Bond Street which is just a ten-minute walk from Hertford Street.
