We were so sorry to hear of the passing of fashion designer Dame Mary Quant, who died today aged 93.
Quant started her fashion career in Mayfair where she worked as an assistant at Erik’s, a couture milliner on Bond Street. Feeling dismayed by the length of time it took to construct a hat which may only be worn for a short time, Quant decided that fashion was her calling and signed up to an evening class, learning dress pattern cutting before working for a short time at renowned pattern company Butterick.
She opened her first boutique, Bazaar, on the King’s Road in Chelsea in 1955 and in 1966, launched her own cosmetics range.
It was an absolute joy to visit a retrospective celebration of her iconic style at the V&A in 2019, where these accompanying photos were taken.
