This month, Sotheby’s will be holding a two-part selling and loan exhibition, Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston, which will celebrate the work of The Bloomsbury Group.

About

Running from 9 November until 26 November, Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston will showcase a selection of paintings, designs, furniture and literature by members of The Bloomsbury Group. Highlights of the exhibition include Omega Workshop ceramics, Percy Wyndham Lewis’s robe and paintings by Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry and Henri Doucet.

The exhibition is beautifully curated by Kim Jones, Artistic Director of Dior Men and Fendi Womenswear and Couture, and Vice President of Charleston.

Radical Modernity: From Bloomsbury to Charleston is hosted as part of Sotheby’s Modern British & Irish Art week. Bryn Sayles, Head of Sale, Modern British & Irish Art at Sotheby’s, explains:

“Whilst for many years works by the Bloomsbury group – and the creatives they inspired – have appeared peppered across our auctions and exhibitions, we are thrilled to now be shining a spotlight on their immense contribution to culture. What is more, Charleston is to British art what Monet’s Garden at Giverny is for Impressionism, so to mount this exhibition with them was the dream pairing for our Modern British art season.”

From Bloomsbury to Charleston

Whilst the radical art movement began in the Bloomsbury area of London, Charleston, the Sussex home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, became the hub of the group. Now open to the public, it’s a fantastic place to visit and become absorbed in the fascinating environs of the circle.

Talk: The Bloomsbury Legacy: Art, Life and the Charleston Aesthetic

At 1.30pm on Sunday 10 November there will be a talk at Sotheby’s, exploring the legacy of The Bloomsbury Group. The panel will include Kim Jones, Vice President of Charleston and Creative Director of Dior, Charleston’s Head of Collection Dr Darren Clarke, cultural critic Frances Wilson and Sotheby’s Jen Hardie. If you would like to attend, please reserve your place via the Sotheby’s website.
