Our local cinema, the iconic Curzon Mayfair, is conveniently just a two-minute walk from Hertford Street.

Showcasing the latest titles alongside classic films, it’s also famed for hosting regular film premieres.

The Grade II listed building, which opened in 1934 and was redesigned in the 1960s by HG Hammond in the Modern Movement style, also retains a fascinating interior with innovative features. Most notable are sculptor William Mitchell’s decorative fibreglass murals in the auditorium which absorb sound, and the two staircases leading from the foyer into the auditorium, which are based on an ingenious ancient Roman invention of vomitaria, which seal off any noise.

This week we look forward to screenings of Maestro, Napoleon, Anselm, Florencia en el Amazonas (from the Met Opera), Babette’s Feast and Derek Jarman’s Blue, which is screening on Wednesday with an introduction by Tilda Swinton.

This beautiful cinema is well worth a visit if you love film or have an interest in architecture. It’s so unique and promises a memorable trip out.
