The Old Curiosity Shop, which dates back to 1567, is known as London’s oldest shop, however it has only been documented as such since Victorian times. Frequented by Charles Dickens, it is thought to have been the inspiration for Dickens’ novel of the same name, however the establishment was given this name after the book was published.
It’s a beautiful building and we are absolutely delighted to learn of its current restoration by its owners, the LSE, under the guidance of the City of Westminster Conservation Officer and Heritage England. It really is quite breathtaking to see such an old building residing amongst modern ones in the surrounds of Portsmouth Street, and we hope it continues to stand for many years to come.
