We are absolutely delighted to share details with you about the annual summer season of Theatre in the Garden, held at a beautiful location in the heart of the West End.
About
Theatre in the Garden is an exciting programme of performances held during the summer at the Actors’ Church in Covent Garden. With a wide array of shows ranging from Shakespeare to literary classics, plus daytime and evening performances, there’s something for everyone.
This year
This year’s programme includes:
- Much Ado About Nothing (set in the 1960s with an original score)
- All’s Well That Ends Well (with inspiration drawn from fairy tales and a Gypsy swing score)
- The Importance of Being Earnest (following a celebrated run at the Chelsea Theatre)
- Jeeves and Wooster in Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves (an amusing and eccentric tale featuring the fictional characters of Jeeves and Wooster who resided in our local Shepherd Market)
- The Railway Children (a nostalgic, children’s literary classic)
- The Hound of the Baskervilles (one of Sherlock’s most chilling cases)
Venue
The performances are held at the Actors’ Church, Covent Garden. The church was designed by Inigo Jones and completed in 1633. It was dedicated to St Paul in 1646. It’s fondly known as the Actors’ Church due to its connection with the West End’s theatre community. In 1662, Samuel Pepys recorded that a Punch and Judy show held there, under the portico (the first ever reference to such a show). The church contains memorials to many notable figures from the world of theatre, including Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Gracie Fields, Vivien Leigh and Ivor Novello.
Also at the Actors’ Church
The church holds regular events including recitals and concerts. The busy venue held around 300 events last year so it’s well worth looking at their calendar to see what’s on during your stay at Hertford Street.
