Undercroft, an exciting new restaurant located in the crypt of St George’s Church Hanover Square, will be opening this Friday (24 January) under the direction of award-winning chef Aldo Zilli.
Cuisine
Aldo Zilli has created a menu which celebrates Italy’s heritage (with inspiration from over twenty Italian regions). Dishes will include Scottish beef meatballs cacio e pepe, spaghetti vongole arrabbiata, monkfish porchetta with creamy lentils and roasted veal chop with porcini mushroom sauce.
Cocktails
Cocktails created by master mixologists will be on offer to complement the dishes.
The Undercroft experience
Joining Zilli in the running of the restaurant are music publisher Martin Priestnall and Michael Kill. This fantastic collaboration promises the very best of food, music and art.
The parish church of St George’s, Hanover Square
St George’s was completed in 1724 as part of a project to bring 50 new churches to the capital. It has a fascinating history – it was Handel’s place of worship (he was also involved in choosing the organ and recruiting the first organist) and co-architect of Hertford Street, Henry Holland Junior, married Capability Brown’s daughter Bridget here in 1773.
The crypt had been used as safe storage for art under the care of auction house Sotheby’s.
Getting there
St George’s Church is a 14-minute walk from Hertford Street, taking you through Berkeley Square and along historic Bruton Street.
