What happens to retired London Underground trains?

Did you know that London Underground train stock run on Alderney in the Channel Islands? The Alderney Railway uses former Northern Line carriages, specifically car numbers 1044 and 1045, which were built in 1959 and were retired from use in London in 2000.

You will also find London Underground trains used on the Isle of Wight Railway. Until 2019, they were running 1930s stock which was then replaced by trains from the 1970s.

The Village Underground, a creative space in Shoreditch, has four Jubilee Line trains which are utilized as a co-working venue.

If you share our love for the capital’s transport history, you may wish to visit the London Transport Museum and the Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum which display fine examples from our Underground past.
